Abstract
An important part of the ideological foundations that sustain inclusive
education are based on the social model of disability. Therefore, in Costa Rica,
in several contexts it is still interpreted through this approach. However,
internationally, inclusive education is described as a space in which every
single person is accepted, respected, and has the same right to participate in
the educational process, regardless of its culture, gender, sexuality, racial
origin, disability, mental status, or any kind of diversity.
Costa Rica´s educational programs exhibit an important effort to pursue
inclusive education. However, this effort has been addressed separately by
each minority group such as disability and special educational needs, gender
equality, sexual diversity, among others. Accordingly, acceptance and
acknowledgment of these different populations has not reached the same
scope; for instance, LGBT visibility and inclusion in our public educational
centers continues to be limited. Understanding inclusive education as a cause
that involves every person, no matter its diversity-related motive, is a way to
progress altogether into a legitimate inclusion that embraces every Costa
Rican citizen.
