Así como las figuras principales en la creación de la no-
vela japonesa moderna eran hombres, también los poetas
masculinos desempeñaron un papel muy importante en
la historia de la poesía japonesa moderna, dando a luz
a una nueva forma de la poesía japonesa tradicional.
La tanka de treinta y una sílabas y el haiku de diecisiete
sílabas sobrevivieron, aunque también sufrieron impor-
tantes innovaciones para adaptarse a las exigencias mo-
dernas de la expresión poética. Los líderes de los movi-
mientos de modernización de estas formas poéticas tradi-
cionales también fueron hombres. Aunque el número de
mujeres era más significativo entre los poetas de tanka,
en general, las mujeres estaban mal representadas en la
poesía japonesa moderna.
La escasez de novelas escritas por mujeres hasta la déca-
da de 1960 a menudo se ha discutido en relación con las
creencias de género de la literatura japonesa moderna,
que es inseparable de la forma en que la literatura se ins-
titucionalizó en el Japón moderno.
Particularmente después del surgimiento del naturalismo,
cuando los escritores varones comenzaron a tomar la li-
teratura como una actividad vocacional, las mujeres que,
en general, estaban confinadas socialmente en el ámbito
doméstico, fueron estructuralmente excluidas de las prin-
cipales actividades literarias (Iida, 2004: 22-24). En con-
secuencia, surgió un nuevo género, la llamada “literatura
de mujeres”. Originalmente mujeres novelistas fueron
sus promotoras, para que las escritoras, que no recibían
la atención adecuada del público lector, presentaran obras
escritas desde el punto de vista único de las mujeres.
Esta separación categórica de la literatura escrita por
mujeres y la escrita por los hombres aumentó el reco-
nocimiento de las escritoras y, también ayudó a ase-
gurar un mercado de lectores para hombres y mujeres.
Al mismo tiempo, sin embargo, esto reforzó la idea de que
la escritura de las mujeres era inherentemente diferente.
La expectativa era que la prosa de las mujeres se ocuparía
de temas “femeninos” particulares, generalmente centra-
dos en asuntos domésticos como la vida familiar, las ta-
reas domésticas, la maternidad, etc. Hubo, por supuesto,
muchas excepciones a esto, y varias escritoras desafiaron
la noción de “literatura femenina” en sí misma, tratan-
do de escribir fuera del género. Sin embargo, el término
“literatura de mujeres” persistió, y fue sólo en 2006 que

Una situación similar existía en el campo de la poesía.
El trabajo de las mujeres se estableció fuera de la “co-
rriente principal” poética, que pertenecía a los hombres.
Las obras de las poetas fueron encasilladas como “poesía
de mujeres”, una subcategoría de “literatura de mujeres”,
y correspondientemente, sus trabajos trataban de temas
adecuados al género. Aun así, encontramos en medio de
los trabajos de poetas femeninas, sutiles desafíos a las
expectativas de los lectores y trabajos que invalidan las
distinciones genéricas debido a originalidad y poder de
expresión. En este artículo deseo presentar algunos de es-
tos trabajos, centrados en tres mujeres poetas del período
moderno, Yosano Akiko, Sagawa Chika e Ito Hiromi 2.
Ellas escribieron sobre temas relacionados con su sexo
femenino; sin embargo, sus obras no son de ninguna ma-
nera complacientes. Las tres se separaron del papel con-
vencional de ser una mujer, a su mejor y más femenina
manera. Lo más significativo es que lo común que veo en
estas tres poetas es la forma en que posicionan su cuer-
po como un punto de referencia para relacionarse con el
mundo externo.
Yosano Akiko (1878-1942) fue una representante de la
“nueva mujer” en Japón a principios de siglo, cuya pri-
mera colección de poesía de tanka, Midaregami (Cabello
Enredado, 1901) causó sensación entre sus contemporá-
neos por su novedad de tema y estilo, caracterizada por
expresiones directas de pasión en un lenguaje desinhibido
y sensual. Sagawa Chika (1911-1936), aunque poco co-
nocida por los historiadores literarios, evocó un mundo
único visto a través de los ojos de una mujer físicamente
frágil que dedicó su energía limitada a enfrentar el mun-
do externo que amenazaba con quitarle la vida. Aunque
trabajó con los modernistas “esprit-nouveau” de la déca-
da de 1920, sus obras demuestran una sensibilidad clara-
mente diferente a la de sus compañeros poetas, particu-
larmente en la forma en que relaciona su cuerpo con el
mundo circundante. Una colección de sus obras poéticas
fue publicada póstumamente. Ito Hiromi (1955 ~) es una
poeta contemporánea cuyo debut poético sorprendió a los
lectores con sus expresiones de sexualidad desafiantes y
no vinculantes, que están construidas de manera inteli-
gente y radicalmente subversivas.
Yosano Akiko escribió tanto el tanka como el verso libre,
