Discusión
Los estudios sobre atropellamiento de fauna silvestre en
Costa Rica han señalado a los didélfidos como las espe-
cies más atropelladas (Monge-Nájera 1996, Artavia et al.
2015, Carvajal-Alfaro y Díaz-Quesada 2016, Monge-Ná-
jera 2018), lo cual concuerda con los resultados, se han
documentado cerca de casas de habitación que pueden ser
un atractivo para esta especie que es un omnívoro oportu-
nista, igualmente han sido comunes y abundantes en los
registros en estudios con cámaras trampa en el área. En
el caso de los murciélagos, los atropellos se registraron en
la cobertura de cercas vivas que se encuentran a lo largo
de la carretera; que pueden ser utilizadas como rutas de
paso, áreas de descanso y sitios de forrajeo (Harvey et al.
2006, Medina 2007, Carvajal 2014). Es importante men-
cionar que este paisaje rural heterogéneo está dominado
por una matriz de pastos, en las que convergen otros usos
de la tierra como cercas vivas, bosques de ribera, planta-
ciones de teca y bancos forrajeros.
Los sitios de alta mortalidad del estudio muestran que los
mamíferos están siendo atropellados en zonas de “línea
recta” y “curvas” coincidiendo con Elvik, et al. (2004) y
Guzmán et al. (2011), quienes argumentan que, espacial-
mente los atropellos se concentran o coinciden con tra-
mos de trazado rectilíneo, donde se alcanzan velocidades
más altas que en zonas de trazado más irregular o bien
con curvas en las que el conductor no puede anticipar el
cruce de animales silvestres.
Como parte de las medidas de mitigación de atropella-
miento de fauna silvestre, se debería respetar y aplicar
lo que establece en la Ley de Tránsito por Vías Públicas
Terrestres y Seguridad Vial. Número 9078, en su Artículo
98. Límites de velocidad, disposición c) en relación con
la velocidad de los vehículos donde se prohíbe circular
a una velocidad superior a 25 km/hr, en toda el área de
estudio, igualmente la rotulación alusiva a fauna silvestre
en la vía es carente y necesaria.
Los atropellos en este paisaje rural se registraron en los
bordes de la carretera asociados a fragmentos de bosque
de ribera y pastos arbolados. A pesar de ser pocos los re-
gistros es necesario continuar con el seguimiento a largo
plazo, esto con el fin de brindar recomendaciones para
reducir el impacto del atropellamiento de mamíferos sil-
vestres. Es importante mencionar que se ha venido traba-
jando en el presente año en el seguimiento de mamíferos
medianos y grandes con cámaras trampa que han sido
colocadas sistemáticamente a lo largo de carretera y en
pasos de fauna presentes en la ruta, en los cuales se han
registrado especies que no se han sido atropelladas, por
ejemplo: el venado cola blanca (Odocoileus virginianus),
Manigordo, (Leopardus pardalis), Pizote (Nasua narica),
Coyote (Canis latrans), Grisón (Galictis vittata).
El registro de estas especies es importante para generar
información científica válida que nos permita analizar si
algunas especies están evadiendo la carretera o bien utili-
zando los pasos de fauna o alcantarillado fluvial para mo-
vilizarse, como lo sugieren (Monge-Velázquez y Sáenz
2022, González- Gallina et al 2022). Finalmente, es nece-
sario dar a conocer este tipo de resultados máxime que la
mayoría de los trabajos se han desarrollado en carreteras
que atraviesan áreas silvestres protegidas.
