Stage 1. Submission of the Manuscript

The submission can be made through the OJS system or by email. The receipt of the manuscript does not necessarily imply that it has been accepted for publication.

OJS
In OJS, the author must create a user account to upload the documents. If any difficulty arises at this stage, please contact the following email: revistagro@utn.ac.cr

Email
The author sends the following information to revistagro@utn.ac.cr:

  • The manuscript in the format requested by the journal, full name, ORCID, affiliation (with city and country), and institutional email.

  • The sworn declaration of originality of the manuscript.

  • If required, images or figures in png format or their editable version with good resolution.

In cases where the documents have multiple authors, the person who sends the email will be identified by the journal as the main contact.

Stage 2. Editorial Review

The director and editor carry out a plagiarism review using the Turnitin tool. If a significant percentage of exact transcription is found without citation or reference, the manuscript will be rejected ad portas.

Subsequently, the editor confirms that all the required documentation has been included and analyzes, together with the director, the relevance of the article within the journal’s thematic areas.

The director or editor will reply to the email within two weeks, indicating to the main contact whether changes must be made or if the article advances to the next stage.

If any requirements are not met, a sub-stage will begin, in which the manuscript is returned to the main contact with comments for improvement.

The author will have ten business days to correct the observations made. After this period, if there is no response, the manuscript will be removed from the editorial workflow.

Stage 3. Single-Blind Evaluation

After applying the observations from stage 2, the manuscript will be submitted to the Editorial Committee, which will select two reviewers (external to the Editorial Committee, the publishing entity, and independent from the author’s institution). They will receive a form with instructions to carry out the review. The Editorial Committee has a maximum period of one month to make this selection.

The journal follows the single-blind model, where reviewers know the names of the manuscript’s authors, but the authors do not know the reviewers’ identities.

Reviewers must have sufficient time to issue their assessment, so they have a period of one month to thoroughly review the document.

They will issue their judgment and classify the manuscript into one of three options:

  1. The document is publishable, as it meets all the requirements.

  2. Publish the document once the suggested corrections are made.

  3. Not publishable, as it lacks many qualifying elements required.

Additionally, the reviewers send the form and the manuscript with tracked changes (if required) to the editor.

In cases where one reviewer recommends rejection and another recommends publication with changes, the document will be sent to a third reviewer to resolve the discrepancy. This reviewer will have one month to issue their judgment.

Stage 4. Sending the Reviewer’s Criteria to the Authors

The editor will review the evaluation form and the manuscripts with comments (according to the reviewers’ criteria) and will send an anonymous document with the corrections to the corresponding contact, so they can incorporate them into the manuscript. This stage takes approximately two weeks.

Stage 6. Reception of the Second Version of the Manuscript

The corresponding contact must return the manuscript with the corrections made within a maximum period of one month. If they object to the ruling, they must submit a reasoned letter with arguments, which will be considered by the Editorial Committee.

Once the article is returned with corrections included, it will be reviewed again by the director and editor of the journal to confirm that the comments were addressed or justified, within a period of one week.

Stage 7. Evaluation and Decision of the Editorial Committee

The manuscripts will be submitted for evaluation by the Editorial Committee, which will either reject or approve the manuscript for publication, based on the reviewers’ judgment.

If the main contact has presented a reasoned explanation regarding the evaluation criteria of their manuscript, it is at this stage that it will be considered for a response.

This stage may last between 15 days and one month, depending on whether there is an appeal by the main contact.

Stage 7. Philological Review and Layout

At this stage, the philological review, reference check, and design of the different document formats are carried out by the journal’s assigned staff. This process may take approximately one month.

Stage 8. Publication of the Manuscript

The Editorial Board reviews the final version of the manuscript, and the editor publishes the article on the official journal website. This stage requires 15 days.

In total, from submission to publication, the process takes up to 35 weeks.
